Tanya Fir has consistently failed to represent the people of Calgary-Peigan. She has ignored constituent concerns, supported policies that harm our environment and public services, and placed party loyalty above the voices of the community. Albertans deserve an MLA who listens, engages, and stands up for them — not one who hides behind silence and broken promises.
This recall is a chance to remind our representatives that public office is a responsibility, not a privilege. Gathering 13,051+ signatures in Calgary-Peigan will cause Ms. Fir to lose her seat in the Alberta Legislature and force a by-election for the constituency.
Constituents reported years of ignored emails, unanswered phone calls, locked or unstaffed offices, and generic copy-paste replies. Personal stories about children, healthcare, and other pressing issues are met with silence or broken promises. Follow-up and meaningful engagement is largely absent.
Constituents consistently see Ms. Fir voting with the party over her people, avoiding independent stances, and providing stock or no responses. She is viewed as disengaged, uninformed, and dismissive of constituent concerns. She also broke promises regarding public consultation for a provincial police force, ignoring widespread constituent opposition.
Ms. Fir has failed to advocate for teachers, students, and parents. She voted for Bill 2 — the Back to School Act — silencing teachers’ rights, and ignored repeated outreach about classroom violence, overcrowding, underfunded programs as well as cuts to supports for children with special needs (PUF).
Ms. Fir ignored many concerned constituents and supported rescinding the 1976 Coal Policy, opening protected areas to coal mining, prioritizing corporate interests over Alberta’s water, environment, and tourism. Policy flip-flops have cost taxpayers $238 million and sparked lawsuits, with little transparency or consultation.
Concerns mentioned included neglect in seniors’ care facilities, reduced access to services for disabled Albertans, and deterioration of PDD/AISH programs. Constituents report first-hand neglect and systemic deterioration, with no meaningful response from Ms. Fir or her office.
As Minister of Arts, Culture, and Status of Women, constituents believe Ms. Fir failed to advocate for women on many occasions such as voting for Bill 2 — the Back to School Act — which impacts teachers as a largely female workforce, and supporting cuts to sexual assault centres. She focuses on symbolic celebrations rather than addressing real needs.
Ms. Fir has supported legislation that undermines democratic norms, including the Notwithstanding Clause and anti-strike legislation, which restrict rights and silence dissent. Many constituents cite these actions as evidence of her contributing to the erosion of democratic accountability.
Ms. Fir has refused to publicly denounce Alberta separatism, raising concerns about divisive nationalism. Combined with past ethics issues — COVID travel, broken promises on healthcare, and coal policy decisions — her judgment and priorities are out of step with constituents.
